Georginio Wijnaldum admits Liverpool were happy to come away with a ‘really important three points’ after seeing his side secure a hard fought 1-0 win at Sheffield United.
The Netherland’s international scored the game’s only goal to extend Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s howler seeing the midfielder’s volley squirm into the back of the net.
Jurgen Klopp’s side had found it difficult to break down their resilient opponents at Bramall Lane, but after helping Liverpool extend their winning run into a 16th league game, Wijnaldum says his side are happy with the three points following their below-par performance.
“We didn’t start the game well. In the first half we slowed the game down too much and that’s why they could stop us,” he told BT Sport.
“It was not the best game we had but we won. A few years ago we would not have been able to win these games.
“It could be a really important three points. It’s really good to keep collecting the points.”
