Liverpool could face expulsion from the Carabao Cup as the EFL investigates whether Jurgen Klopp’s side fielded an ineligible player in their victory over MK Dons on Wednesday night.
The EFL is investigating the eligibility of midfielder Pedro Chirivella, who came on as a substitute as Liverpool progressed to the fourth round with a 2-0 win over the League One side.
The 22-year-old was making his first appearance for the club in over three years, having spent the past three seasons on loan in the Netherlands and later Spain.
Despite having signed for the clubbing 2013, Chirivella’s international clearance is believed to be in question having not been renewed following his loan spell at Extremadura during the second half of last season.
According to the BBC, the sanctions Liverpool could face range from a fine to potential expulsion form the competition.
Liverpool are currently scheduled to face Arsenal at Anfield in the fourth round on October 29.
