The most goals in a Premier League season by an Aston Villa player

Ollie Watkins continued his superb season for Aston Villa with a brace in the club’s 3-2 win at Luton this weekend.

The forward’s 15th and 16th goals of the Premier League campaign kept him in contention for the division’s Golden Boot and set a new personal record for a top-flight campaign.

Watkins is now closing in on a club record for Premier League goals in a single season and we’ve ranked the highest-scoring Aston Villa players in a Premier League campaign.

Ollie Watkins – 2023/24 (16*)

Ollie Watkins reached 16 goals for the Premier League season with his double at Kenilworth Road, eclipsing his best-ever return in a top-flight season of 15, set last term.

The 28-year-old has found the form of his career under Unai Emery and leads the league for goal involvements (26), while no other player in the Premier League has returned 10+ goals and 10+ assists to date.

Watkins will hope his form can earn him a place with England this summer, having missed out on recent major tournaments with the Three Lions.

“If I said I wasn’t thinking about the Euros I would be lying to you,” he told BBC Sport.

“I have played Premier League football for a number of years now. I missed out on the last Euros squad because it was my first season in the Premier League.

“I am scoring, I am established, so it is down to the manager if he wants to pick me.”

Juan Pablo Angel – 2003/04 (16)

Juan Pablo Angel signed for Aston Villa in a £9.5m club-record deal from River Plate, after scoring 46 goals in 96 league games for the Argentine side.

The South American striker struggled to adapt to the Premier League initially, but soon became a fans’ favourite at Villa Park.

Angel spent six seasons with Aston Villa and his best campaign came in 2003/04, as the Colombian hit 23 goals in all competitions, 16 of which came in the Premier League, to fire Villa to a top-six finish.

Dwight Yorke – 1995/96 and 1996/97 (17)

Dwight Yorke established himself as one of the league’s leading forwards in the mid-nineties, with a change from a wide role to a central position seeing the Trinidad and Tobago striker star in Claret and Blue.

Yorke scored 17 league goals in consecutive campaigns for Aston Villa in 1995/96 and 1996/97, with the first of those campaigns also seeing Villa win the League Cup. He scored in the 3-0 final win over Leeds United at Wembley, in what remains Villa’s last major trophy success.

Yorke scored 97 times in 284 appearances for Aston Villa before his performances attracted interest from Premier League rivals. Manchester United agreed a deal to sign the forward for a club-record £12.8m in 1998 and he proved to be an instant hit at Old Trafford.

He won the Premier League Player of the Season and Golden Boot awards in his debut campaign, as Manchester United won a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble.

Christian Benteke – 2012/13 (19)

Christian Benteke holds the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season for Aston Villa.

The Belgian target-man arrived in a £7m deal after a prolific period at Genk and hit the ground running in the Premier League. Benteke marked his debut with a goal against Swansea and continued to fire, ending his first season with 23 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions.

He became the first forward to breach 20 goals in a season for Aston Villa in nine years and finished as runner-up to Tottenham’s Gareth Bale for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Benteke scored 42 goals in 89 league appearances across three seasons at Villa Park, before a £32m move to Liverpool.
