Ranking the five favourites to sign Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial is understood to want an exit from Manchester United next month, with the player’s agent having confirmed the forward will seek a transfer during the January transfer window.

Martial has struggled for form and fitness across the past 18 months and has fallen out of favour this season, starting just two Premier League fixtures during the 2021/22 campaign to date.

The France international is keen to leave in search of regular first-team football and will attract interest from a number of clubs seeking attacking reinforcements during the winter window.

Here are the five favourites to sign Anthony Martial from Manchester United.

Borussia Dortmund – 16/1

Borussia Dortmund are set to enter the market for a centre-forward in the coming months, with Erling Haaland expected to leave the Bundesliga side during the summer as Europe’s elite circle.

Haaland has a release clause of €75m that will become active at the end of the season and Dortmund will be unable to resist advances from the world’s leading clubs for the prolific Norwegian.

Dortmund’s transfer policy has tended to be low-cost signings of players with huge upside and sell-on value, though Martial could appeal to the German’s hierarchy given his pedigree, age, and room for further development.

The 26-year-old is both versatile and experienced, whilst he could thrive with a leading role at Dortmund after finding himself on the fringes of the Red Devils’ first team of late.

Dortmund have been priced at 16/1 odds and could enter the market for Martial at the right price, though the club’s leading target is believed to be the signing of Red Bull Salzburg teenager Karim Adeyemi, who has scored 14 goals in 18 appearances for the Austrian champions this season.

Arsenal – 16/1

Arsenal have been linked with several attacking additions in recent months, the signing of a new centre-forward believed to be next on the list of priorities for Mikel Arteta and his recruitment team.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future appears uncertain following the club captain’s recent disciplinary breach, whilst the Gabon international has scored just four league goals during the current campaign.

Both Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are also expected to leave at the end of the season, with the forward duo out of contract at the Emirates next summer.

Martial would represent a Premier League proven upgrade at centre-forward for the Gunners, if the north Londoners can coax the best from a talent who has lost his way in recent months.

The Frenchman scored a career-best 23 goals in all competitions during the 2019/20 season to be named as Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year.

Paris Saint-Germain – 14/1

Paris Saint-Germain are another side who could monitor Martial’s situation, given the uncertainty surrounding Kylian Mbappe’s future at the Parc des Princes.

Mbappe is a free agent next summer and has failed to sign a new deal at PSG, having pushed for a move to Real Madrid last summer after a series of failed bids.

PSG will be powerless to prevent the France international from signing for the Spanish giants in 2022, but could look to replace Mbappe with Martial.

The Manchester United forward is comfortable in a variety of roles across a front three, having operated in both a wide and central positions during his time at Old Trafford.

Newcastle – 10/1

Newcastle are set to be the major spenders of the January transfer window, as the Magpies look to invest the billionaire backing of the club’s new ownership.

Eddie Howe’s side are mired in the Premier League’s bottom three and in desperate need of reinforcements, and could find it difficult to persuade leading names to make the move to St James’ Park amid their current predicament.

Newcastle possess issues at both ends of the pitch but a lack of goals has contributed to their position in the relegation places, scoring just 17 goals from 16 league fixtures so far this season.

There has been an over-reliance on leading scorer Callum Wilson since his arrival in the North East, with Allan Saint-Maximin the only other player to have scored more than once in the league this season.

Martial would provide a significant upgrade on the likes of Joelinton and could form an exciting front three alongside Wilson and Saint-Maximim.

West Ham – 5/1

West Ham are the 5/1 favourites to sign Martial from Manchester United, with the Hammers in search of forward additions to boost their push for Champions League qualification.

Michail Antonio is the club’s only recognised option at centre-forward as David Moyes’ side also juggle Europa League commitments this season, though he has failed to score in his last seven league appearances after a blistering start to the campaign.

Martial’s versatility means he could prove the perfect addition or alternative in the West Ham attack, capable of operating in tandem with Antonio at the London Stadium.

The signing of the France international would differ from Moyes’ successful recent recruitment of unproven names with a point to prove, but there could be a temptation to get the best from a forward with huge talent.

United may be reluctant to strengthen a side currently in contention for a top-four finish, however, with West Ham currently fourth and one point ahead of the Red Devils in the Premier League.
