Ranking the five favourites to sign Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling is understood to be unsettled at Manchester City after falling out of favour at the Etihad, the winger having started just three league fixtures so far this season.

Sterling spoke earlier this month on his future and admitted he would be ‘open’ to a move abroad should his prospects not improve, with the likes of Jack Grealish and Phil Foden having moved ahead of their England colleague in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order.

The 26-year-old has just over two seasons remaining on his current contract and City could look to cash-in on the winger whilst his value remains high – should he express a desire to leave.

Manchester City are strong contenders to lift the Premier League title this season, and are a popular draw for fans who enjoy live in-play betting on mobile during matches thanks to their star studded team and entertaining, dynamic style used by manager Pep Guardiola. If Sterling were to make a move, he’d likely be looking to join a club offering similar potential to take home some silverware, and where he’d get enough play time to keep his position in the England squad secure.

Understandably, Sterling has been linked with several top flight clubs in Europe. Here are the five favourites to sign Raheem Sterling.

Real Madrid – 18/1

Real Madrid have been priced at 18/1 odds to sign the England international, with Sterling having voiced his interest in playing abroad after a wealth of Premier League success.

The Spanish giants have regularly sourced big-name additions from the Premier League across the past decade, having previously signed the likes of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard from English clubs.

However, Los Blancos’ focus appears to be on the signings of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland after some relatively quiet recent windows, with a move for Sterling perhaps only arriving on the club’s agenda should deals for that duo fail to materialise.

Tottenham – 16/1

Tottenham are fourth favourites to sign Sterling from Manchester City, in a deal that would see the winger return to his native London after a Premier League career spent in the North-West.

Sterling was linked with a move to Spurs during the summer as City considered potential makeweights in a deal to sign Harry Kane, but was reportedly not interested in moving to North London in part-exchange.

City could return with renewed interest in Kane during the winter window or next summer, as Pep Guardiola seeks the signing of a leading centre-forward.

It remains unclear as to whether Sterling would change his summer stance and head in the opposite direction however, given Spurs remain a side in transition and are without a major trophy for more than a decade.

Barcelona – 14/1

Barcelona have been regularly linked with a move for Sterling in recent months as a side in crisis seek reinforcements and inspiration at the Camp Nou.

Ronald Koeman’s side have endured a difficult start to the post-Lionel Messi era and currently sit ninth in La Liga, having won just four of their opening nine league games of the campaign.

Summer signing Memphis Depay has began brightly, but there is a need for further reinforcements with fellow recruit Luuk de Jong looking some way short of the standard required.

Sterling would offer a ready-made upgrade on the club’s current options, but Barcelona’s financial situation makes a deal difficult with reports City would demand a fee of around €80m for the player.

The departures of Messi and Antoine Griezmann have freed room on the wage bill, but it appears unlikely that City would sanction a loan deal.

Newcastle – 10/1

Could billionaire-backed Newcastle make Sterling their first marquee arrival?

Newcastle have been catapulted into the financial elite following a Saudi-backed takeover at St James’ Park, with major changes anticipated as the Magpies look to splash the new owner’s cash.

Currently without a manager following the departure of Steve Bruce, Newcastle are without a win this season and in desperate need of an injection of quality to kick-start the new era.

Whether Sterling – even given the finances likely to be offered in the direction of prospective signings – would swap Manchester City’s title charge for an immediate fight against relegation is up for debate.

Paris Saint-Germain – 10/1

PSG are the joint-favourites alongside Newcastle to sign Sterling, with the Parisians expected to lose Kylian Mbappe at the end of the current campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side turned down several offers for the France international from Real Madrid during the summer transfer window, but the forward is out of contract at the season’s end and expected to complete a free transfer move to the Bernabeu.

Sterling would represent a fine addition to a squad stacked with talent at the Parc des Princes, whilst the prospect of dovetailing alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar is likely to appeal to a player who has expressed a desire to test himself abroad.

Pochettino will be familiar with Sterling’s qualities after regularly facing the winger whilst manager of Tottenham and PSG are one of the few sides capable of affording the winger in the current climate.
