Remembering Lionel Messi’s debut for Barcelona

Lionel Messi will leave Barcelona this summer after the club were unable to fulfil his new contract due to financial issues, the curtain coming down on the career of the Camp Nou’s greatest ever player.

Messi has achieved things few thought possible during a glittering period of success in Catalonia, scoring a record-breaking 672 goals in 778 appearances and winning ten league titles, four Champions League trophies and a record six Ballon d’Or accolades amongst his honours.

Hailed as a special talent from a young age, Messi made his debut aged just 17 years, three months and 22 days during a Catalan derby against Espanyol in October 2004, becoming the second-youngest player to make their Barcelona bow.

Replacing Deco with eight minutes of the clash remaining, the Barcelona supporters were introduced to a player who would alter perceptions at the pinnacle of the sport over the next two decades.

Here is Lionel Messi’s debut for Barcelona.
