Cesar Azpilicueta does not score many goals.
Before this weekend, the Spanish full-back had managed just 20 goals in 752 previous club appearances. He’d never scored a goal in La Liga and was fast approaching 50 games for Atletico Madrid without finding the net.
Until now.
The 35-year-old opened the scoring against Espanyol on Saturday with a stunning hit for the Spanish side, arriving on the edge of the box to thunder an effort past the highly-rated Joan Garcia.
It wasn’t enough to earn Atleti the points, as Javi Puado’s equaliser from the penalty spot salvaged a draw from Espanyol. The draw is damaging to Atletico’s title hopes with the Rojiblancos now six points off the top.
Still, Azpilicueta is unlikely to have scored a better goal in his career.
A Goal of the Season contender.
