It was a transfer that sparked outrage on the streets of Florence as furious fans rioted, Fiorentina superstar Roberto Baggio making the move to fierce rivals Juventus.
Baggio had become a hero at Fiorentina following five seasons of his balletic brilliance, establishing himself as one of Italian football’s brightest talents before capturing the attention of the Turin giants.
Juventus splashed a world-record €10m to sign Il Divin Cordino (‘the divine ponytail’), and whilst the Fiorentina fanbase were left reeling the Bianconeri were celebrating the signing of a player who would produce some magical moments in the club’s colour.
Baggio scored 115 goals in just 200 appearances for Juventus and won the Ballon d’Or in 1993, forming part of the side that were crowned champions in the peak of Serie A’s nineties success.
Amongst a vast collection of the game’s greats in Italy’s top tier throughout the decade, Baggio sparkled like few others as the best Italian footballer of his generation.
