Ranking the five favourites to sign Renato Sanches this summer

Renato Sanches is hot property once again following the midfielder’s renaissance at Lille, with the youngster’s performances at Euro 2020 having once again attracted the attention of Europe’s elite.

Sanches was named as the best young player at the 2016 European Championship and moved to Bayern Munich in a big-money deal that summer, though the then teenager struggled to make an impact during three seasons in Germany.

After winning the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2020/21 and impressing for Portugal this summer however, Sanches is on the radar of several clubs this summer in search of midfield dynamism.

As those of you who like to follow the latest odds on Vwin, the best Asian sportsbook platforms for Betting on football will surely be wondering where Sanches will end up playing his football next season, we decided to check out the clubs who are favourites to secure his signature.

Tottenham – 16/1

Tottenham are rumoured to be interested in signing the Portugal international, as compatriot Nuno Espirito Santo begins his rebuild of the side after replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho.

The north London outfit have strong competition for midfield places with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele amongst their current contingent, though Sanches could provide a different and dynamic option in the centre of the pitch.

Sanches struggled during a loan spell in England at Swansea as a teenager, though the midfielder’s combination of physical and technical qualities appear tailor-made for the demands of the Premier League.

Having rebuilt his reputation in France, Sanches could be tempted by a return to English football should Spurs find the finances to complete what would likely be a costly deal.

Bayern Munich – 16/1

Could Bayern Munich admit a mistake and re-sign Sanches this summer?

The Bundesliga champions have been priced at 16/1 odds to sign the 23-year-old this summer, just one year after allowing him to leave for Lille in a deal worth around £21m.

Recent unconfirmed reports have suggested that Bayern inserted a buy-back clause of around €30m following Sanches’ move to France, a figure far lower than what Lille could potentially command on the open market for the midfielder.

Sanches signed for Bayern in a deal worth an initial €35m – rising to €80m with potential add-ons – but he failed to make a significant impression, starting just 10 league fixtures.

Atletico Madrid – 12/1

Atletico Madrid are third favourites to sign Sanches, as Diego Simeone looks to strengthen his squad following their La Liga title triumph in 2020/21.

Atletico are reportedly in the market for a new midfielder this summer, with Premier League-linked Saul Niguez being tipped to leave the Wanda Metropolitano.

Portugal teammate and Atletico forward Joao Felix sent the rumour mill into overdrive after jokingly encouraging a move to Spain for Sanches on Instagram, commenting ‘Come to Atletico’ on an Instagram post from the midfielder.

Atletico – like Spain’s other superpowers – have been hit hard financially by the Covid-19 pandemic and the sale of players would likely be needed before a move could be launched for the in-demand star.

Arsenal – 7/2

The odds shorten significantly with Arsenal priced at 7/2 to sign Sanches this summer, with the Gunners linked with a third successive raid on Lille after signing Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel from the French side over the past two summers.

Mikel Arteta is seeking to overhaul his squad following a disappointing Premier League campaign, the north London side finishing the season eighth to miss out on European qualification.

Midfield additions are of paramount importance with both Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard having returned to Real Madrid after loan spells, whilst Granit Xhaka is expected to leave for Roma.

With Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira also surplus to requirements, Arsenal have a lack of options in central midfield and Sanches has been linked – alongside Portugal teammate and Wolves star Ruben Neves – with a move to the Emirates.

Sanches is believed to be ready to leave Lille and the French side are reportedly willing to sell for the right price, one that Arsenal could meet as funds are raised through a number of anticipated departures.

Liverpool – 5/4

Liverpool are the favourites to sign Sanches this summer with a potential move to Merseyside having been routinely in the headlines in recent weeks, the Reds in need of midfield reinforcements following Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

Wijnaldum has been a consistent presence in the club’s engine room over the past five seasons and made 51 appearances in all competitions in 2020/21, his exit a huge void to fill as Liverpool look to compete with Manchester City and regain the Premier League title next season.

Sanches’ explosive style could add a new option to a midfield often accused of being functional in recent campaigns, with his ability to break lines and burst forward from a deeper midfield position.

Given the inability of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to find consistent form and fitness, Sanches’ signing could perfectly compliment the talents of Jordan Henderson, Thiago and Fabinho as Jurgen Klopp looks to return the Reds to the top of English football.
