Euro 2008 proved the tournament that saw Spain end decades of underachievement to be crowned champions, Fernando Torres’ final winner sealing success for La Roja after a 44-year wait for a major trophy.
The tournament itself proved a brilliant occasion for the neutrals, averaging 2.48 goals-per-game, the fourth-highest figure in European Championship history, up to and including Euro 2020 this summer.
The Netherlands emerged as the early favourites after blitzing through the tournament’s ‘Group of Death’ in scintillating fashion, though the Oranje bowed out in the quarter-finals to an exciting Russia team who alongside Turkey became the surprise packages of the tournament.
Perennial contenders Germany reached the final to face off against the Spanish however, with the latter emerging victorious as tiki-taka conquered Europe and sparked an unprecedented period of international dominance.
