Dennis Bergkamp and one of the most famous hat-tricks in Premier League history

Leicester City’s Kelechi Iheanacho netted the Premier League’s 345th hat-trick on Sunday against Sheffield United, yet amid all those brilliant trebles, one simply stands above the rest for pure footballing brilliance – the legendary Dennis Bergkamp’s against the Foxes in 1997.

Plucked from Inter Milan, following a difficult two-year spell in the San Siro, by the ill-fated Bruce Rioch at Arsenal in 1995, the Dutchman quickly cemented his status as one of the top-flight’s most gifted and most feared forward players.

While his 11-year stay in north London was littered with fine moments, none were quite as brilliant as during the 1997/98 campaign, in which he fired 22 goals in all competitions as the Gunners won a league and cup double under the revolutionary Arsene Wenger.

The Holland international may have evolved into an assist king in later years, yet that season, in particular, showcased his prowess in front of goal, as he tore the Leicester defence apart on one August evening at Filbert Street.

His first was a stunning curling effort from just outside the box, before he added a second midway through the second-half with an excellent dink over the onrushing Kasey Keller. With the home side drawing the game level late on, Bergkamp produced arguably his most memorable goal in an Arsenal shirt, collecting the ball with a sublime touch inside the box, before jinking over the head of a hapless Matt Elliot and calmly curling Past Keller.

The Foxes may have snatched a late equaliser, but the real story of that game was that unbelievable treble, with all three goals going on to be nominated for the goal of the month award.

Here we relive the famous treble and hear what the man himself had to say about that glorious hat-trick:
