One of the best left-backs of his – or any – generation, one moment often springs to mind when discussing Roberto Carlos and his ability to hit free-kicks very, very hard.
Carlos’ incredible goal against France for Brazil lives long in the memory, a stunning strike that seemed to defy the laws of physics as it dipped, swerved and bent in improbable fashion before hitting the back of the net.
The former Real Madrid star made a habit of producing spectacular moments throughout his career however, with that aforementioned effort just one of a catalogue of thumping drives from distance.
There often appeared no distance that was off-limits to Carlos when it came to set-pieces, with his signature stuttering run-up and penchant for blasting the ball with maximum power.
Amongst his very finest efforts was this El Clasico blockbuster against Barcelona, another free-kick struck to perfection that left the goalkeeper with no chance as it flew beyond his reach.
Here is Roberto Carlos’ brilliant free-kick against Barcelona.
