Roberto Carlos developed somewhat of a reputation for the spectacular during a stunning career, the former Real Madrid left-back a regular provider of awe-inspiring moments.
Carlos was a footballer ahead of his time with his rampaging runs forward from full-back, a potent attacking weapon with his pace, power and dynamite in his left boot.
The Brazil international shared set-piece duty during a glittering career in the Spanish capital, his technique one of wonderful simplicity with a long run-up and thudding hit from distance.
Amongst his collection of Golazo efforts was this cracker against Villarreal in 2000/01, a trademark Carlos effort as he powerfully bends the ball beyond the goalkeeper.
His effort was the third in a thumping 4-0 win for the capital club, with Guti also netting a hat-trick as Los Blancos marched towards the La Liga title.
Here is Roberto Carlos’ classic free-kick against Villarreal in 2001.
