Ranking the players to win most tackles in Europe’s top 5 leagues in 22/23

Plenty of brilliant tacklers have impressed across Europe’s top five league this season, with this feature an ode to those who just love getting ‘stuck in’.

Prolific ball winners can be just as important to a team’s success as goalscorers and no players have retrieved possession on more occasions than this lot in 2022/23.

Ranking the players to win most tackles in Europe’s top 5 leagues in 2022/23

Bryan Cristante – Roam (113)

Bryan Cristante has been an under-rated component of the Roma midfield for several seasons and led Serie A for tackles during the 2022/23 campaign.

The 28-year-old registered 113 tackles in the league at an average of 3.1 per 90 minutes, as Roma finished sixth in the division under Jose Mourinho.

Cristante also topped the Europa League for tackles (39) as Roma reached the final of the competition, with the Italy international finishing ahead of Manchester United’s Casemiro and team-mate Nemanja Matic for tackles in the tournament.

Guido Rodriguez – Real Betis (115)

Guido Rodriguez has had a remarkable rise in recent seasons with the midfielder having gone from relative unknown to Argentina international and World Cup winner.

Rodriguez made his debut for Argentina after impressing at Mexican side Club América, where he won the Mexican Golden Ball as Liga MX’s finest footballer in 2018/19.

The midfielder moved to Real Betis that summer and has since developed into one of La Liga’s most effective defensive screens, leading the division for tackles in two of the last three campaigns.

After recent success with Argentina at the Copa America and World Cup, Barcelona have been linked with a summer move for the 29-year-old as the Catalans look to find a replacement for Sergio Busquets.

Andrei Girotto – Nantes (122)

Andrei Girotto has had the most settled period of his career since signing for Nantes, where the midfielder formed part of the team that won the Coupe de France in 2021/22.

Nantes have failed to replicate that success this season after the loss of Randal Kolo Muani, battling against relegation in Ligue 1.

Girotto has been an important figure in the club’s successful fight for survival, with the Brazilian recording a huge 122 tackles in the domestic league. Only one player in the division managed more.

Benjamin Andre – Lille (128)

Benjamin Andre has been a fine signing for Lille and has topped Ligue 1 for tackles for the second successive season.

Andre signed for Lille in an €8m deal from Rennes in 2019 and has since proven excellent value with his ability to win the ball prolifically in midfield.

The 32-year-old was named in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season after Lille caused a shock to win the title in 2020/21 and has made 100+ tackles in each of the last three league campaigns.

Joao Palhinha – Fulham (147)

Joao Palhinha has led Europe’s top five leagues for tackles during the 2022/23 campaign with the midfielder having been one of the signings of the Premier League season.

Palhinha was overlooked last summer when several leading clubs were targeting midfield reinforcements, but that oversight has proven to be Fulham’s gain.

Marco Silva sanctioned a £20m deal to sign his compatriot from Sporting Lisbon and has been rewarded with a superb season from Palhinha, who has made more tackles and won more duels than any other player in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old’s performances are understood to have attracted interest from wealthier sides and Fulham can expect to more than double their initial investment if Palhinha departs.

The west Londoners will be loath to lose the midfielder however, with Palhinha’s presence having been a key factor in Fulham’s impressive top-flight return.
