Ranking the five favourites to win the Premier League Golden Boot

The race to finish as the Premier League’s leading scorer looks set to be more competitive than ever in 2022/23, with Manchester City and Liverpool among the sides to have made statement signings in attack.

Mohamed Salah and Son Heung-Min shared the honour last season and will be among the favourites once again, though will face competition from both marquee arrivals and past winners elsewhere in the division.

Ahead of the new campaign we’ve looked at how the bookmakers assess the Golden Boot race, and you can try to capitalize on our research at Bet 365 mobile app, the review of which players can find here So here are the five favourites to finish as the Premier League’s leading scorer this season.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 10/1

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the Premier League last season amid much fanfare, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner scoring 18 league goals despite a disastrous season for Manchester United.

Ronaldo trailed only the joint-Golden Boot winners for league goals last season and has been priced at odds of 10/1 to finish as the league’s leading scorer in 2021/22.

Despite his advancing years, Ronaldo remains a brilliant goalscorer and Erik ten Hag will hope to build a system that brings the best from the Portugal captain next season.

Ronaldo won the Premier League’s Golden Boot in 2007/08 and has since won leading scorer accolades in both Spain (2010/11, 2013/14, 2014/15) and Italy (2020/21) in a record-breaking career of productivity around goal.

He might be set to turn 38 next season, but the ever ambitious Ronaldo will have his sights set on another prolific campaign.

Son Heung-Min – 9/1

Son Heung-Min became the first Asian footballer to win the Premier League’s Golden Boot last season, with a blistering end-of-season run of form seeing the South Korean share the prize alongside Mohamed Salah.

Son scored 11 goals across the final 10 fixtures of the Premier League season to fire Tottenham to a top four finish and Champions League qualification, earning the club’s Player of the Season accolade for a third time in just four seasons.

The 29-year-old and Harry Kane remain an elite duo for the north Londoners and the task for Antonio Conte will be building around the pairing as he attempts to turn Spurs into a silverware-winning side.

Harry Kane – 6/1

Son might have outscored Kane in the Premier League last season, but the latter has led Tottenham’s goal charts across all competitions for eight straight seasons and has already outlined his ambition to challenge for the Golden Boot this season.

The signings of Erling Haaland (Manchester City) and Darwin Nunez (Liverpool) have increased competition, though it is a challenge Kane says he is relishing,

“It’s always been a tough battle to win the golden boot and with those two new signings it’s going to be the case,” Kane said at a pre-match press conference ahead of England’s Nations League clash with Hungary.

“It drives me as a player, I look forward to the challenge.

“Going into any season I have things I want to achieve. I can’t control what other players do but I’ll continue to work hard and improve.”

Kane has won the Golden Boot on three previous occasions and a fourth in 2022/23 will see the England captain level Thierry Henry’s all-time record of four accolades.

Mohamed Salah – 9/2

Mohamed Salah is also chasing a fourth Premier League Golden Boot in 2022/23, having won the prize for a third time last season.

Salah scored 20+ league goals for the fourth time in five seasons last term and will once again be among the favourites for the Golden Boot, following a brilliant individual campaign in which the Liverpool forward was named as winner of the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

He also became just the fourth player to finish top of the Premier League for both goals and assists, registering 36 goal involvements in 35 appearances.

The Egyptian is another who will find increased individual motivation from the marquee arrivals into the division this season.

Erling Haaland – 4/1

Erling Haaland has been installed as the early favourite for the Premier League’s Golden Boot, with expectations high following the forward’s move to Manchester City.

Haaland has emerged as one of world football’s finest forwards in recent campaigns, scoring 86 goals in 89 appearances across his two-and-a-half seasons with Borussia Dortmund.

He has averaged better than a goal-per-game in the Champions League and has 20 in 21 appearances for Norway at international level.

The 21-year-old will now join up with arguably Europe’s best club side right now, a team which scored 99 league goals last season without the presence of a recognised centre-forward.

He will be relishing the service set to be provided by the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez next season.
