Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly ‘not given up’ hope of signing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba, despite an already busy summer of recruitment.
As has been the case for much of his time since he returned to Manchester United, the French international once again faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford as he nears the end of his existing contract, with that deal set to expire in June 2022.
The 28-year-old did enjoy an improved campaign with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side after an injury hit 2019/20, with United keen to tie him down to a new deal.
However, there remains the dilemma of whether they should attempt to cash in on him this summer should he fail to agree to new terms as opposed to losing him for free next summer.
The midfielder only served to bolster his reputation by starring for France at Euro 2020, albeit with the World Cup holders and pre-tournament favourites suffering a shock last-16 exit at the hands of Switzerland.
According to French publication L’Equipe, one potential destination for Pogba this summer could be that of PSG, the Ligue 1 side said to have ‘not given up’ on signing the midfielder.
The report suggests that the former Juventus man has neither received an offer of renewal from the Red Devils, nor from elsewhere, although is likely to welcome any interest from the French giants, as the prospect of playing at the Parc des Princes seemingly appears to appeal to him.
Should he not sign a new deal at his current club, the Premier League side may look to sell him in the coming months, with his valuation said to be in the region of €50-60m (£42-51m).
That fee is likely not to put off Mauricio Pochettino and co, despite the club having already enjoyed an extensive summer of recruitment thus far.
Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum knocked back Barcelona to join the club on a free transfer and is said to be followed by both Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma on similar deals, while Inter Milan wing-back Achraf Hakimi has joined the club for a fee in the region of €60m.
The addition of Pogba to an already mouthwatering side would further improve the club’s chances of securing a coveted, maiden Champions League triumph, while also softening the blow should Kylian Mbappe depart, the 22-year-old also with just a year left on his existing deal amid interest from Real Madrid.
As for United, the club could already be eyeing up a replacement for Pogba in the form of his compatriot Eduardo Camavinga, the Rennes teenage sensation another whose current deal expires in 12 months’ time.
Before a move for Pogba can come to fruition though, the report says that PSG will need to offload a number of players as they look to balance the books, with the likes of Alphonse Areola, Thilo Kehrer and Pablo Sarabia named as potential departures, while there is said to be interest from Spain in Ander Herrera.
