Premier League clubs discuss pushing transfer window back by a week

Premier League clubs have discussed the prospect of extending the summer transfer window, with an additional period permitted for domestic deals only.

The division’s clubs discussed the proposals during Thursday’s Premier League meeting, officials from Chelsea understood to have proposed pushing the current transfer deadline from June 9 to June 16, whilst adding a further week in September to conclude deals between top-flight and EFL sides.

The changes would mirror what happened last October, when business between Premier League and Football League sides was permitted beyond the European transfer window deadlines.

Amongst the notable deals to have come during last year’s domestic window include West Bromwich Albion’s £15m signing of Karlan Grant from Huddersfield, and the arrivals of Craig Dawson and Said Benrahma at West Ham from Championship sides.

According to the Mail, the proposals are said to have been greeted positively, though will need to receive a majority vote from Premier League clubs and FA approval before coming to fruition.

The meeting also included talks to reschedule the final fixtures of the season, in order to allow each side to play a home fixture following the government’s plans to allow the partial reopening of stadiums from May 17.

Allowing fans for only the final day of the season has seen some question the competition’s integrity, though several clubs are opposed to the changes.

Newcastle are believed to ‘strongly’ want to maintain the current schedule which sees the final three games played over 12 days, with the changes condensing those fixtures into a nine-day period.

Steve Bruce’s side are understood to want the additional rest over the reintroduction of fans, despite incidentally travelling to face Fulham in a potential relegation-decider on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign.
