Carrick admits Man Utd ‘unravelled’ in defeat to Chelsea

The Red Devils lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Michael Carrick admitted that Man Utd unravelled in the second half against Chelsea after making a promising start at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The Red Devils were much the better side in the opening 45 minutes, but spurned a number of chances to take the lead.

Indeed, it was the hosts who went ahead in the 50th minute when Morgan Rogers found the net. Lisandro Martinez went on to get sent off and give away a penalty, which was converted by Cole Palmer.

United have now gone nine games without a win in all competitions, their worst run in 42 years.

“We didn’t get going second half,” Carrick told TNT Sports at full-time. “We should’ve been up in the first half. Everything was as positive as we could’ve hoped for. We looked really dangerous.

“Found a way of unravelling in the second half. Bad goal to concede and then the penalty, we’re right up against it. The game turned on its head.”

Carrick felt that Rogers’ goal swung the momentum of the match in the favour of Chelsea.

“I don’t think our heads dropped,” he said. “The boys were in a good place first half. You could see that with the performance in the first half.

“It just gave them a lift and gave them a lift. We didn’t start the second half great. They made the first blow and that made the difference.”

Carrick added that he did not see Martinez’ red card incident and did not feel let down by the defender, but was unwilling to discuss the player.

The 45-year-old also expects to remain in charge of Man Utd for Tuesday night’s meeting with AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League.
