Steve Bruce has provided an injury update on his depleted Newcastle side ahead of the Magpies’ trip to face Manchester United this weekend.
Newcastle have been without a series of senior players with the club’s defensive options having been particularly stretched in recent weeks, with the lack of options having contributed towards a run of just two wins from 13 games to slide towards the relegation places.
Callum Wilson’s absence is also a major blow to the club’s plans with the Magpies’ leading scorer expected to miss two months after sustaining a hamstring injury in the 3-2 win over Southampton earlier this month.
Monday night’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea leaves Newcastle just one place and six points above the Premier League’s bottom three, and Bruce spoke of his relief that the club have not had any new injuries ahead of Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford.
“Thankfully we’ve not got any new injuries ahead of the weekend,” said Bruce at his pre-match press conference.
“Federico Fernandez trained yesterday and the day before but Sunday will be too soon for him. We’re hoping he’ll be ready for Wolves [on 27 February].”
“Fabian Schar has had his operation and Callum Wilson’s is a muscle injury so we have to be patient with him.
“The one that looks better is Javier Manquillo. He twisted his ankle badly but has responded well to his treatment.”
