Jose Mourinho would like to keep Matteo Darmian at Manchester United until the end of the season, despite the Italian internationals desire to return to Serie A.
Darmian has made just one appearance this season and after failing to secure a move away in the summer, is keen to leave the club in the January transfer window.
With concerns in the full-back area regarding the fitness of Antonio Valencia and Diego Dalot, Mourinho is keen to maintain the services of Darmian who is comfortable playing at either right or left full-back.
The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his United contract, although the club do have an option to extend, and ESPN are reporting that United would demand a fee for a player who has attracted interest from the likes of Juventus, Inter Milan and Roma.
Darmian arrived at Old Trafford from Torino in a £12.7m deal in 2015.
