Match Preview – Liverpool vs Leeds

Liverpool secured their place in the Champions League’s knockout rounds in midweek and will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League against Leeds this weekend.

The visitors arrive with huge concerns after dropping into the bottom three, with Jesse Marsch coming under increasing pressure at Elland Road.

Here is all you need to know about Saturday’s clash at Anfield.

Form

Liverpool: WWWLW

Liverpool suffered a setback after a shock loss at Nottingham Forest last weekend, with the Reds having appeared to have turned a corner with back-to-back wins over Manchester City and West Ham.

Despite mixed domestic form, Jurgen Klopp’s side have been impressive in Europe and home and away wins over Rangers and Ajax have secured passage to the Champions League’s last-16 with a game to spare. Attention now turns to the Premier League, with last season’s runners-up eighth and a huge 12 points off leaders Arsenal.

Issues remain defensively and only Fulham have posted a worse xGA figure than Liverpool since the start of October, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho below their usual level.

Andy Robertson produced an encouraging performance in midweek however, while Darwin Nunez’s form has been a positive. Despite missing a guilt-edged chance at Ajax, the Uruguayan scored a fine headed effort and has now netted on his last four starts for the Reds in all competitions. The sight of the 23-year-old working back to regain possession on the edge of his own area at Ajax was welcomed, as he continues to get to grips with Klopp’s demands.

Leeds: DLLLL

Leeds appear a team in free fall and the pressure is growing on Jesse Marsch after four straight defeats. A bright start to the season has been replaced with a run of eight games without a win, form which has seen Marsch’s side drop into the Premier League’s relegation places.

Leeds lack the old spark going forward and have improved little defensively, a combination which saw the club’s fans chant for former manager Marcelo Bielsa during the 3-2 defeat to Fulham last weekend.

It is not the first time the supporters have sang the name of the popular Argentine and Marsch faces a fight to win over his doubters.

Leeds have lost three of the four Premier League meetings with Liverpool since returning to the Premier League, conceding 14 goals in the process.

Last Meeting

Liverpool 6-0 Leeds, February 23rd 2022

Liverpool ran riot to hit Leeds for six in February, as the rampant Reds recorded a sixth straight Premier League win at Anfield.

Leeds were overwhelmed on an embarrassing evening for the visitors, who trailed 3-0 at the interval following Mohamed Salah’s brace of penalties and a wonderful Joel Matip goal.

Jurgen Klopp’s side maintained the pressure after the break, with Sadio Mane scoring a brace of his own and Virgil van Dijk adding a sixth goal in stoppage time.

The defeat meant that Marcelo Bielsa’s struggling Leeds side had conceded 56 goals in the Premier League – including 31 in their past nine matches – the highest number in the division.
