Fantasy Premier League: Four of the best captains for GW14

Each week we preview the Premier League action and provide our best advice for Fantasy Premier League, selecting four options we believe should be the leading contenders for your crucial captaincy.

There’s just three more rounds of Premier League fixtures until the break for the World Cup, when FPL bosses will be given a chance to reflect on the season so far.

Ahead of Gameweek 14, we look at four of the best captaincy options in Fantasy Premier League.

Erling Haaland vs Leicester (A)

Erling Haaland takes up his almost permanent position in this feature, with it difficult to overlook a forward who continues to make the Premier League his playground.

Haaland scored two more goals during Manchester City’s 3-1 win over Brighton last weekend, taking his total to a barely believable 17 goals in just 11 league games. Just three players scored more than 17 league goals in the Premier League across the entirety of last season, with Haaland currently on course to break the division’s goalscoring record by the first weekend of February – even with the presence of a mid-season World Cup breaking up the season.

The numbers are astonishing from the Norwegian who has shown few signs of slowing down. He takes on Leicester this weekend who – despite their improvement in recent weeks – retain the worst defensive record in the division.

Just one side – Liverpool – has prevented Haaland from registering a goal involvement in the Premier League this season. Going against the grain on FPL captain selections is not often a wise move. The premium players are premium for a reason and none are justifying their price-tag more than Haaland this season.

FPL managers should note that Haaland was substituted at half-time in midweek with a knock. Ensure team news – Pep Guardiola will address the media on Friday – is checked before confirming on your selections this week.

Mohamed Salah vs Leeds (H)

Mohamed Salah continued his fine form in the Champions League with a goal against Ajax in midweek taking his total to six goals in just five appearances for Liverpool in Europe this season.

Salah is the joint-leading scorer in the Champions League alongside Kylian Mbappe, but has recorded just three goals in 11 league games for the Reds. Last season’s Golden Boot winner takes on a Leeds team in free fall this weekend, with Jesse Marsch’s team having dropped into the Premier League’s bottom three after four straight defeats.

Salah also has a strong record against Leeds – who have not won in the Premier League since August – with six goals and an assist in just three appearances against this weekend’s opponents.

Ivan Toney vs Wolves (H)

Ivan Toney will want to improve his chances of a World Cup place with England as Brentford host Wolves in Gameweek 14.

Toney has scored eight goals in 12 appearances this season with only Harry Kane (10) having scored more among English players in the division.

Wolves arrive at Brentford without a permanent manager and having been on the wrong end of a 4-0 thrashing at home to Leicester last time out. Goals have long been a problem for Wolves, but they’re now conceding them at the opposite end with the club’s defensive strength having softened in recent weeks.

Toney scored in both Premier League meetings with Wolves during the 2021/22 campaign.

Harry Kane v Bournemouth (A)

Tottenham are not firing on all cylinders at present, but Harry Kane has remained a constant threat for the north Londoners and trails only Erling Haaland for goals this season.

Kane has scored ten goals and provided an assist in 12 league appearances this term, in what has been the England captain’s best-ever start to a Premier League campaign.

Spurs take on Bournemouth this weekend looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats, with the Cherries’ strong start under Gary O’Neill having wobbled after successive league losses of their own.

Kane boasts a formidable record against the South Coast outfit, having scored seven goals in eight appearances against Bournemouth. He has blanked on just three occasions so far this season.
