Marcos Alonso has been in and out of favour more times than we can remember at Chelsea, a defender by name and trade but a man whose greatest strengths undoubtedly belong at the opposite end.
Alonso previously had brief spells at Bolton and Sunderland before signing for Chelsea in a surprise £24m deal from Fiorentina, with incoming manager Antonio Conte well aware of what the Spaniard could bring to his preferred wing-back system.
The more advanced position utilises the best of Alonso’s attacking qualities with his ability to ghost forward and a fine left foot, helping Chelsea to the Premier League title during his maiden campaign, before being named in the PFA Team of the Year the following season.
He remains a part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans and has enjoyed a return to prominence following the German’s use of wing-backs this season, with few Premier League ‘defenders’ having been as effective when venturing forward in search of goals in recent campaigns.
Here are Marcos Alonso’s best moments at Chelsea.
