Manchester United’s five most expensive players ever

Manchester United have never been afraid to splash the cash and with the 20 time League Champions tipped to be one of the big movers on transfer deadline day, we thought it would be the perfect time to take a look at the Old Trafford outfits most expensive signings ever …

PAUL POGBA £89.3m 2016

Pogba began his career at Old Trafford, but left the club in 2012 for Juventus in search of first-team football. After impressing during four trophy-laden seasons in Turin, United broke the world record transfer fee to resign him in the summer of 2016.

Despite struggling for consistency and with the pressure of being the worlds most expensive player since moving back to Manchester United, the France international finally added maturity and tactical discipline to his obvious natural ability as Les Blues won the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer.

The 24-year-old boasts a unique blend of athleticism and unbelievable technical ability. United will be hopeful he can fulfil his potential and become one of the world’s best players over the next few seasons – if they can keep him out of Barcelona’s clutches beyond this summer that is.

ROMELU LUKAKU £75m 2017

Manchester United beat off competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea to secure the signature of Belgium international Lukaku last summer for £75 million from Everton.

Although, he has had his critics during his maiden campaign at Old Trafford the 25-year-old has notched an impressive 26 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions. Lukaku boasts power, pace and lethal finishing ability, and if he can improve his link-up play United will have a world-class striker on their hands.

ANGEL DI MARIA £59.7m 2014

Di Maria arrived at Old Trafford from Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2014 with a reputation as one of Europes top attacking midfielders. Despite starting his United career in fine form, and being handed the clubs famous number seven jersey, his form soon nosedived and he fell out with then Red Devil’s boss Louis Van Gaal.

The Argentina international never really seemed to settle in Manchester, and was sold the following summer to PSG for £44 million, leaving United supporters with a feeling of regret that they never really got to see the best of him.

NEMANJA MATIC £40m 2017

United pulled off a major transfer coup last summer when they somehow convinced Chelsea to part ways with their influential defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The Serbia international has slotted in to Jose Mourinho’s side perfectly since his move to Old Trafford. Matic brings a calmness to United’s midfield play that had previously been missing, and his ability to cover defensive duties in the middle of the park was supposed to make him the perfect foil for the more attack minded Pogba, although that has never really materialised.
