Kylian Mbappe’s contract situation at Paris Saint-Germain has led to growing concerns that the forward wants to quit the club this summer.
Mbappe is one of the finest talents in world football and underlined his importance to PSG with another starring display in the Champions League in midweek, scoring twice as Mauricio Pochettino’s side won 3-2 at Bayern Munich in the first leg of their quarter-final tie.
The 22-year-old is arguably the most valuable asset in the game and PSG have been trying to tie the star down to a new long-term contract, with Mbappe’s current deal set to expire in the summer of 2022.
According to the Telegraph, whilst contract talks have progressed with teammate Neymar over an extension, discussions with Mbappe have failed to find a breakthrough and there are now growing concerns the France international wants to leave the Parc des Princes.
Mbappe has remained coy on his future and says he is determined to make the right decision on his next contract, though his unwillingness to commit has increased doubts.
PSG will face a huge decision on his future should he refuse to sign a new deal before the summer, with the prospect of Mbappe entering the final year of his contract with the club a precarious one financially.
Should he become available, each of Europe’s elite clubs would be interested in his signing and it presents the interesting narrative of the world’s best contesting for the signatures of both Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland this summer.
Mbappe has finished as the leading scorer in Ligue 1 in each of the past two seasons and leads the charts once again in 2020/21, the forward having hit 32 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions so far this season.
PSG remain hopeful of agreeing a new deal for his services and are reportedly confident that Neymar will put pen to paper on an extension in the near future.
The finances involved in any deal appear difficult given the current climate, but the world’s leading clubs will do all they can to land Mbappe if he decides his future is away from PSG.
Real Madrid are the side that have been most strongly linked with the Frenchman, while there have been plenty of links to Liverpool too.
