Arsenal XI vs Liverpool – Predicted lineup and team news

Arsenal travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon looking to respond to a chastening EFL Cup exit to League Two Fleetwood Town.

Arsenal travel to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, looking to respond to a chastening EFL Cup exit to League Two side Fleetwood Town.

Mikel Arteta’s side are second in the Premier League, kept off top spot only by an inferior goal difference to Manchester City, and go into the match on the back of a 2-0 win over Everton that extended their winning league run to three matches. That form was overshadowed in midweek, however, as a much-changed Arsenal lost on penalties to Fleetwood after a 1-1 draw, with Max Dowman sent off in a contentious incident. Arsenal fans are still waiting for a first League Cup success since 1993, a wait the Fleetwood defeat has only extended.

Arsenal team news

Dowman begins a three-match domestic suspension after the FA upheld his red card, and Bukayo Saka remains out with a serious quad injury, depriving Arteta of options on the right. William Saliba is also a long-term absentee with a back problem, and Noni Madueke is a doubt. Dowman’s suspension leaves Arteta light on the right flank, an area already weakened by Saka’s lengthy absence.

Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori and Christos Tzolis have all trained this week and are expected to be involved at Anfield, with several of the second-string players who featured against Fleetwood set to make way. Illan Meslier, Piero Hincapie, Martin Zubimendi, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Cristhian Mosquera are among those expected to be dropped after a disappointing showing in Lancashire. No further fitness concerns have been reported elsewhere in Arteta’s squad. Arsenal have lost just once in their last eight Premier League meetings with Liverpool, but have not won away at Anfield since 2012.
