Goalkeepers can often feel under-appreciated in comparison to their attacking contemporaries, with great goals often replayed more often than stunning saves.

Gregory Coupet’s incredible double-stop against Barcelona is one moment that deserves countless replays and acclaim however, the former Lyon star making arguably the save of the century in a Champions League clash against the Spanish side.

Coupet was a key component of Lyon’s golden generation of talent, the Ligue 1 side winning seven consecutive league titles during the 2000s and regularly competing alongside the best in Europe.

The goalkeeper’s glorious intervention was perhaps the defining moment of his career, two extraordinary moments of athleticism to deny the Catalans.

A wayward backpass appears set to loop over the goalkeeper as he races back towards his goal, before Coupet dives to head the ball against his own crossbar.

The loose ball appears to fall perfectly for Rivaldo to head into the open goal, only for Coupet to spring back into action and deny the Brazilian from close range in an astonishing sequence of action.

Here is Gregory Coupet’s sensational double save against Barcelona.
