Giggs backs Bale amid Real Madrid criticism

Wales manager Ryan Giggs has backed under-fire Real Madrid star Gareth Bale.

Bale’s future in the Spanish capital looks uncertain after manager Zinedine Zidane made clear the 29-year-old was not part of his future plans, with reports in Spain suggesting the Welsh international is prepared to stay at the club for the duration of his lucrative three-year contract despite facing a lack of game-time.

Giggs admitted to being surprised by the criticism Bale has faced in Spain, with the former Tottenham star having played a key role in the club’s recent successes.

“Yes, but I’m not over there. I’m not a Real Madrid fan,” Giggs told the press ahead of Wales Euro Qualifier against Croatia.

“I don’t know the ins and outs and I’m only looking from the outside.

“But you’ve got a player who won the team the Champions League final last year with one of the best goals you’ve ever seen and performs for that team week in, week out.”
