Gary Neville was one of Man United’s finest players in the nineties and noughties.
Before becoming one of the country’s best pundits when he joined Sky Sports, he was, as Arsene Wenger once put it, the “best English right-back” of his generation and beyond.
The most important honour of all to the Salford City FC co-owner though, is his tag as a one-club man, having made exactly 400 league appearances for the Red Devils over 19 years, 602 in all competitions.
Neville was a defender in the truest sense of the word – he scored just seven goals, which is just over one goal per 100 games – and perhaps one of the last old-school full-backs, unlike the new breed who are, for all intents and purposes, wingers that defend a bit.
The former England international came through the club in 1992 as part of ‘Fergie’s Fledglings’ and left a legend two decades later.
