Match Preview – Everton vs Manchester United

Everton host Manchester United in the Premier League this weekend as the Toffees welcome Erik ten Hag’s side to Goodison Park.

The visit of the Red Devils will represent a tough test for Everton, who will be aiming to continue their recent unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Here is all you need to know about Sunday’s clash.

Form

Everton: WDDDWW

Everton are improving under Frank Lampard this season and are now seven games unbeaten in all competitions. Six of those have come in the Premier League, with back-to-back wins over West Ham and Southampton having got the Toffees season up and running.

Lampard’s summer signings are beginning to exert influence on the side and the centre-back partnership of Conor Coady and James Tarkowski has been the foundation of their recent success. Everton have conceded just seven goals so far this season, the best defensive record in the Premier League.

Idrissa Gueye, Amadou Onana and Alex Iwobi provide a midfield screen of tenacity and bite, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is closing in on a first-team return in a much-needed boost further forward.

Manchester United: WLWLW

Manchester United suffered a setback after a Manchester derby thrashing last weekend, with the Red Devils four goals down at half-time in a 6-3 defeat at the Etihad.

City outclassed Erik ten Hag”s side and the Dutchman admitted their embarrassment was a ‘lesson’, as a run of four consecutive league wins was ended in emphatic fashion.

United bounced back with a 3-2 win at Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League in midweek, but were forced to come from behind as substitute Marcus Rashford scored twice in Cyprus.

Rashford’s form has been a huge positive in recent weeks and the 24-year-old has eight goal involvements (5G and 3A) in eight games – more than he managed across the whole of last season.

Last Meeting

Everton 1-0 Manchester United, April 9th 2022

Everton secured a huge result in their battle to beat relegation after a 1-0 win over the Red Devils in April.

Frank Lampard’s side were under pressure after defeat at relegation rivals Burnley in midweek but responded with a hard-fought win on Merseyside, as Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of a tense game at Goodison Park.

The winger’s drive deflected off Harry Maguire to wrong-foot David de Gea and give Everton a first-half lead. The Toffees held firm to secure all three points with Jordan Pickford making excellent saves from Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo.
