Euro 2000 holds a special place in the hearts of football fans from that era, a tournament in which some of the generation’s greatest players more than lived up to expectations.
France cemented their place as one of the great international sides of all time after following their World Cup success of two years earlier with European Championship glory, led by the exquisite Zinedine Zidane who arguably reached his peak at the finals.
The goals flowed freely throughout with the final fixture delivering a dramatic Golden Goal winner, Italian hearts broken late on as David Trezeguet sealed the trophy for France.
Elsewhere England endured an embarrassing group stage exit, whilst there were fine performances from a series of mercurial number 10s, with a free-scoring Netherlands and talented Portuguese outfit amongst the tournament’s better teams.
As this summer’s European Championship begins to heat up, we look at five of the best players from Euro 2000.
