David Alaba keen to announce Bayern exit today amid Premier League interest

David Alaba is set to announce a decision his future today amid interest in the Bayern Munich defender from the Premier League.

Alaba has entered the final months of his contract at Bayern and will leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season, a host of Europe’s leading clubs having expressed an interest in signing one of the most high-profile free agents of 2021.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are all understood to have expressed an interest in signing the Austria international, though Real Madrid emerged as the frontrunners with the Spanish champions seeking defensive reinforcements.

Alaba has spent his entire senior career with Bayern to date and has enjoyed a glittering period of success in Bavaria, winning nine league titles and two Champions League trophies and making more than 400 appearances in all competitions.

Bayern this week announced the signing of Dayot Upamecano from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig, the signing of the France international set to pave the way for Alaba’s exit with Sport Bild reporting the defender will make an announcement on his future today.

The 28-year-old – who can play centrally, at full-back and in midfield – saw contract talks with Bayern break down over his wage demands with reports suggesting Alaba wanted a deal that moved him closer to the club’s highest-paid players.

Alaba’s status as a free agent will allow him to command a huge contract from interested parties and clarity on his next venture appears imminent.
