Campbell reckons Lamptey injury ‘scuppers any chance’ of Arsenal transfer

Kevin Campbell believes Tariq Lamptey’s latest injury ‘scuppers any chance’ of the Brighton defender completing a move to Arsenal this summer.

Lamptey has been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent months after impressing since signing for the Seagulls from Chelsea, the 20-year-old establishing himself as one of the most exciting young defenders in the Premier League this season.

Arsenal are understood to be interested in signing a new right-back this summer and speculation has continued to link the Gunners with a move for the England U21 international, who is now expected to miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to repair a damaged hamstring.

Lamptey’s injury is the latest in a succession of problems for the youngster during the current campaign, and former Arsenal forward Campbell believes the player’s concerning injury record is likely to lead to the north Londoners considering alternative targets.

“There is clamour for the club to sign a recognised right-back this summer but I think the injury scuppers any chance of that move,” Campbell told Football Insider.

“Arsenal need players who are going to be there. We need players who are fit regularly.

“Lamptey has already had multiple injuries as a young player and that does not bode well.

“You do not want to buy players who cannot last a full season. That has been Arsenal’s achilles heel for years.”

Lamptey – who has also been linked with Everton – arrived at the Amex Stadium in a £3m deal in January 2020 and has made just 11 league appearances for Brighton during the current campaign, scoring one and providing one assist for Graham Potter’s side.
