Arteta labels Man City as ‘best side in Europe’ ahead of meeting with his old club

Mikel Arteta has labelled former side Manchester City as the ‘best side in Europe’ as Arsenal prepare to face the league leaders at the Emirates this weekend.

Arsenal host City on Sunday afternoon with the visitors arriving in imperious form, Pep Guardiola’s side having won their past 17 fixtures in succession in all competitions to open up a 10-point advantage at the top of the Premier League.

Man City are in pursuit of a third league title in just four seasons under Guardiola and Arteta is well aware of the threat posed by this weekend’s opponents, having spent three seasons on the coaching staff at the Etihad before his appointment as Arsenal manager in 2019.

The Spaniard believes the current league leaders are the ‘best team in Europe at the moment’ and admits the north London side have a ‘big’ challenge to secure a result this weekend.

“I think they are the best team in Europe at the moment,” said Arteta at his pre-match press conference.

“The way they are performing, the football they are playing and the consistency of the results – take all that it and it makes them the best team.

“So we have a big but, as well, a very exciting challenge ahead of us on Sunday.”
