Arsenal welcome Lille to the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday in the Champions League, looking for a 14th successive league-phase win.
Mikel Arteta’s side opened their campaign with a 1-0 win at Napoli, where Martin Odegaard scored 15 minutes from time and Arsenal generated 4.05 expected goals, their highest total in a single Champions League match. They sit 15th in the early league-phase table, while Lille are 22nd after a 3-2 home defeat to Real Betis. This is the first meeting between the clubs in any match.
Arsenal beat Leeds 2-1 on Saturday after an unconvincing first hour, but they have conceded six goals in their last three matches in all competitions. Injuries picked up in the warm-down after that game have narrowed Arteta’s options at left-back and in midfield, and as many as five changes to the side are expected.
Arsenal team news
Christos Tzolis (hamstring), who was injured during the international break, and William Saliba (back) remain out, though Saliba has been working individually on the grass. Piero Hincapie, who was carried off the pitch with an ankle injury, and Martin Zubimendi, who took a knock, both missed Monday’s open training session and are considered extremely unlikely to be fit. Riccardo Calafiori, who scored the equaliser against Leeds, is therefore the only specialist left-back available, unless Myles Lewis-Skelly is moved out of midfield.
Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa and Kai Havertz were all passed fit for Leeds despite withdrawing from their national squads, and every other senior player trained on Monday, including Cristhian Mosquera after his hamstring problem. Zubimendi’s absence leaves Mikel Merino and Bruno Guimaraes, the winner against Leeds, as the likeliest midfield pairing, with Rice having played the full 90 minutes on Saturday. Viktor Gyokeres is expected to start in place of Havertz, who returned from a hamstring problem to start against Leeds. Eberechi Eze is tipped for a recall, and Jurrien Timber is expected to replace Ben White at right-back.
Arsenal predicted lineup
Arsenal possible starting XI: Raya; Timber, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Merino, Guimaraes; Saka, Odegaard, Eze; Gyokeres
