Michael Carrick has hailed the contribution of Shea Lacey after the teenager set up Manchester United’s dramatic winner against Roma.
Lacey came off the bench to assist Matheus Cunha’s late winner against Roma, as United fought back from 2-0 down to beat the Italian side in the Champions League.
The win ended a run of nine games without a victory for Carrick’s side, and improved their chances of progress to the Champions League’s knockout rounds.
Carrick was asked about academy product Lacey, and said he was delighted to see the youngster take his chance. He said the midfielder is ‘so talented’ and ‘desperate’ to do well at Manchester United.
“I’m delighted for Shea, we love him to bits. He’s so talented and desperate to do well,” the United manager said.
“We moved Matheus inside in the second half and put Bryan [Mbeumo] out wide on the left, just to try to give ourselves a better balance. The boys respect Shea a lot. He’s desperate to do well and he was even defending at right-back towards the end, which I was joking with him about after the game.
“It just shows what he’s prepared to do, and to see young players take opportunities like that, there aren’t many better things, I must say.”
