Xabi Alonso says Cole Palmer’s contract extension can help build an era of success for Chelsea.
The Blues revealed the playmaker had extended his deal with the club until 2034, ahead of beating Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Palmer continued his resurgence this season by assisting Jordan Henderson for the opener, his fifth goal involvement in six Premier League matches.
Alonso wants Palmer contract extension to kickstart Chelsea era of success
“I’m happy for him and very happy for the club as well, and I’m sure the fans are delighted that we have Cole for years.
“We need to push him. We need to help him, that these years are of success and what we are starting building he’s important in everything.
“You want to keep the best ones for years and we believe that Cole is going to be a top class player for many years, so the longer we can assure that we have him here, the better.”
Palmer echoed Alonso’s sentiments after signing his new deal. “Chelsea means a lot to me and I think the club is going in the right direction, so I’m delighted to sign and I’m obviously very happy,” he said.
“Speaking to the owners, to the sporting directors and obviously the manager, they gave me a lot of confidence so it was only right to sign.
“Speaking to players as well, everyone has the same ambitions. I feel like we win major trophies here consistently and I want to be a part of that and play a big role in it too.”
