Arsenal reject Roma bid for Xhaka

Arsenal have rejected a bid of £12.9m (€15m) from Roma for midfielder Granit Xhaka.

The Italian side are interested in signing the Switzerland international with new manager Jose Mourinho keen to reinforce his midfield, though the BBC are reporting that the club’s offer has fallen short of Arsenal’s valuation of the player.

Xhaka made 47 appearances across all competitions for the north London side last season, though it is expected he will be allowed to depart should Roma meet the Gunners’ asking price with major changes anticipated at the Emirates this summer.

Mikel Arteta’s side endured a disappointing season to finish eighth in the Premier League, with the Gunners keen to raise funds for their summer recruitment through player sales.

Xhaka is one of a number of players who could leave having endured a mixed period since signing for the club in a £35m deal from Borussia Monchengladbach five years ago, having been appointed as captain before being stripped off the armband after a public fall-out with the Arsenal support.

Xhaka is currently with the Switzerland squad at Euro 2020 and recent reports have suggested Arsenal are holding out for a fee of around £17m for the midfielder.
