United have made Varane their number one defensive target for this summer’s transfer window and have begun negotiations with Real Madrid over a deal for the France international.

The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu and is keen for a new challenge in the Premier League following a decade in Spain, with AS revealing the player’s eagerness for a deal to be reached.

United are understood to have agreed personal terms with the centre-back, though the two teams remain apart in their valuation with Real Madrid reportedly seeking around €60m despite Varane’s contract situation.

United are aware that the pressure will increase on Real Madrid as the transfer window progresses, with Los Blancos running the risk of losing Varane on a free transfer next summer if a deal is not agreed.

However, Marca are reporting that neither club – or Varane – wants to delay the matter much longer, with Real accepting that a sale is ‘the best option’ as they bid to recoup vital funds for their own recruitment.

Varane’s preference is for a move to be finalised as soon as possible with the World Cup winner keen to head straight for Manchester following his post-Euro 2020 holiday, the defender due back to Real Madrid training this week.

Despite the current standstill regarding the fee, an agreement is expected to be reached with Marca reporting the Red Devils’ most recent offer is reportedly over €50m.

The differences in reported fees between the English and Spanish media perhaps represents the ‘cat and mouse’ games being played between the Premier League side and Real Madrid, though all indications at present are that Varane is most likely to be heading to Old Trafford before the window’s closure.
