Liverpool undoubtedly have one of, if not the best front three in world football, but former Red Phil Thompson has backed the club’s apparent interest in Timo Werner.
The Germany international striker has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks and months, with Werner openly talking about a potential move to Anfield.
The striker has a £52 million release clause in his contract at RB Leipzig, though any interested parties only have until June 15th to trigger it – a deadline which Liverpool reportedly have ‘no intention’ of meeting, especially amid the ongoing crisis.
While Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have formed one of football’s most feared triumvirates, former Liverpool centre-back turned Sky Sports pundit, Phil Thompson, reckons his old side ‘need’ a player of Werner’s quality, simply to increase the strength and depth of their attacking ranks.
“I think he’ll give a realistic challenge to the front three. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino – they look as though they’re set,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“We do have Divock Origi but I think everybody realises that he’s more of an impact player, for sort of the last 15, 20 minutes – but that’s not really good enough.
“We do need somebody a little bit better. Some people will say, ‘Will Werner get in and will he want to come to Liverpool?’. I think he would and I think he does.
“You look at Manchester City, they’ve got two top class players in every position. That is what Liverpool need and I think Werner would help to give us that.
“With the lure of Jurgen Klopp, I think that would tick the box for him, and I think he would be a fantastic signing. Something that we do actually need.”
