The most Premier League points won after falling behind this season

Powers of recovery are a crucial sign of the character of Premier League teams and Liverpool boosted their hopes of title success with a comeback win against Brighton this weekend.

The Reds have now won more games after falling behind this season than in any previous Premier League campaign, a mentality which has taken Jurgen Klopp’s team top of the table with nine games to go.

We’ve looked at the five Premier League teams who have recovered the most points from losing positions this season.

5. Brighton – 14 points

Brighton have a decent record when it comes to rescuing results after falling behind, with their 14 points the fifth-best return in the Premier League.

The Seagulls have fallen behind on 17 occasions during the 2023/24 season, but have avoided defeat in eight of those games, winning three and drawing five. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have beaten Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Brentford despite trailing.

Brighton also have a strong record in protecting leads, having lost just twice in the 16 games they have taken the lead in this season, winning 11.

4. West Ham – 15 points

West Ham have recovered 15 points from losing positions this season, the most recent being a 3-1 win at Everton last month that saw the Hammers scored twice in stoppage time through Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez.

David Moyes’ side also earned a memorable win at London rivals Tottenham earlier in the campaign, as second-half strikes from Jarrod Bowen and James Ward-Prowse cancelled out Cristian Romero’s opener for Spurs.

3. Manchester City – 21 points

Manchester City are third in the Premier League for points won when trailing in 2023/24, having amassed 21 points from such situations.

Pep Guardiola’s side have fallen behind on just 12 occasions this season, however, the second-lowest figure in the division behind Arsenal (8). Across the festive period, the Citizens won three consecutive away games despite falling behind, turning around ties at Everton, Newcastle and Brentford.

2. Tottenham – 22 points

Tottenham extended their record for points won after falling behind to 22 points after another come-from-behind victory at the weekend.

The north Londoners earned a late win over Luton despite Tahith Chong’s third-minute opener for the Hatters, with an Issa Kabore own goal and Son Heung-min keeping alive the club’s hopes of a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Four of the last five victories for Ange Postecoglou’s side have come after conceding the first goal and the Australian will hope his side’s slow starts can be eradicated across the run-in.

1. Liverpool – 26 points

Liverpool lead the way with 26 points won from losing positions this season after issuing a response to beat Brighton on Sunday. The Reds regrouped after Danny Welbeck’s opener inside 87 seconds with goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah earning three points at Anfield.

Liverpool’s seven wins when trailing is a league-leading figure and the highest the Merseysiders have ever recorded in a Premier League campaign.

Perhaps the most memorable comeback game was in early December, when Liverpool turned around a thriller with Fulham. Losing 3-2 with 87 minutes gone, late goals from Wataru Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold earned Jurgen Klopp’s side a dramatic three points.
