The highest average attendances in Europe in 2023-24

Football fans will brave wind, rain or shine in support of their clubs, with loyalty knowing no bounds for some. But which teams were the best supported in Europe last season?

We’ve ranked the European teams with the highest average attendance during the 2023-24 campaign.

5. Real Madrid – 72,061

Real Madrid’s modern makeover of the Santiago Bernabeu has given the home ground of Europe’s most decorated club a futuristic feel to match their grand status. Alongside an increase in capacity, the renovations have seen the exterior of the ground transformed into a spaceship-esque look and the introduction of a pitch storage and removal system.

An average of 72,061 fans watched the Spanish and European champions each home game last season, though that number is likely to swell after their modernisation. The arrival of Kylian Mbappe from PSG has certainly excited the fanbase with 85,000 in attendance for the unveiling of the France captain this month.

The Nerrazzuri reclaimed the Scudetto for the first time since 2020-21, cantering to the championship with the most goals scored, least conceded, and a 19-point winning margin from runners-up AC Milan. The title was Inter’s 20th, earning a second star above the club crest.

3. Manchester United – 73,534

Manchester United led the Premier League for support in 2023-24 as an average of 73,534ย  fans attended Old Trafford each home game.

Some might wish they hadn’t bothered on occasion, as the Red Devils lost six times on home soil to slump to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League – the club’s lowest league position for 34 years.

2. Bayern Munich – 75,000

Bayern Munich are another side who performed below expectations in 2023-24, as the Bavarians’ iron grip on the Bundesliga came to an end.

For the first time since 2011-12 there was a different name on the trophy, as Bayer Leverkusen won a maiden Bundesliga crown without losing a game.

Bayern ended the campaign third in the club’s first trophyless season for 12 years. The 75,000 average attendance at the Allianz Arena will demand a response next season, under the new management of Vincent Kompany.

The Germans are another side under new management ahead of the upcoming campaign, after Edin Terzic’s shock decision to leave. Former favourite Nuri ลžahin has replaced Terzic in the dugout.
