Erik ten Hag is ‘confident’ that Manchester United’s forward players have the ‘talent’ to score 20+ goals this season.
United are fifth in the Premier League after last weekend’s 2-1 win at Everton, as the Red Devils came from behind to win at Goodison Park.
The club have won five of their last six Premier League games, but have scored just 13 goals from their opening eight fixtures. Only Bournemouth (9) have scored less among teams currently in the top half.
United required a stoppage-time winner from Scott McTominay to edge past Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday and Ten Hag discussed his side’s lack of goals and options at centre-forward. He insists he is confident that he has players capable of scoring 20+ goals this season.
“Yes, I’m confident, mostly,” Ten Hag told his pre-match press conference ahead of this weekend’s clash with Newcastle. ”In my teams, there are players who will score. They come into the position and in the last part, it’s also about the freedom from the player, the intuition, the space they have to take.
“When they have that feeling then you will see that when they have the talent, when they have the potential, they will score that number of goals.
“I think we have in our squad players who can score that number of goals, but you can also divide it, because we have many goal scorers across the offensive department. But I think we also need something from midfield and the defensive department.”
