Report: Manchester United ‘re-establish’ communication with Griezmann

Manchester United have supposedly made contact with Antoine Griezmann about a potential move to the club.

Griezmann last week announced his intention to leave Diego Simeone’s side this summer after five years in the Spanish capital, with Barcelona instantly being installed as favourites to trigger his £108m release clause.

Despite his announcement, there has seemingly been no further progress regarding a move to the Nou Camp, with the hierarchy at Barcelona reportedly divided on whether to pursue a deal for the Frenchman, with some questioning the benefit of signing him.

The Spanish champions were interested in signing the 28-year-old last summer, only for Griezmann to announce his intention to remain with Atletico for a further year in a much-ridiculed public video message.

Officials at Barca are now said to be questioning whether the club would be better off investing the £108 million in other areas of the squad, having once again seen another epic capitulation in the Champions League.

With the Catalan club seemingly stalling over a deal, the door could be opened for Manchester United to rekindle their previous interest in the player, with the Independent claiming that the Red Devils have ‘re-established’ contact with the French forward regarding his signature.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to be keen to add to his attacking options this summer, and with Romelu Lukaku looking likely to depart, Griezmann’s ability to play across the forward line would be a valuable asset.

However, with a lack of Champions League football on offer at Old Trafford next season, reports of United’s interest is likely to be a case of hurrying Barcelona along in finalising a deal, with the Red Devils’ name often getting banded about by agents to progress other dealings.
