Reguilon agrees Spurs deal as Man Utd refuse to meet Real Madrid's demands

Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Sergio Reguilon, as Manchester United refuse to meet Real Madrid’s demands over the sale of the newly-capped Spanish international.

Reguilon has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe following a fine season on loan at Sevilla, the youngster named as the best left-back in La Liga after helping the club to a top-four finish and a record-extending sixth Europa League title.

Real Madrid are prepared to allow Reguilon to leave despite his impressive campaign on loan, with the club well-stocked at left-back with both Marcelo and Ferland Mendy options at the Bernabeu.

The Spanish giants recognise Reguilon’s talent and potential for improvement, however, and made the insertion of a buy-back clause essential to any potential sale, the Guardian reporting that Manchester United were unprepared to agree to those terms despite holding a strong interest in the player.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were also not prepared to meet the €30m asking price upfront, which has allowed Spurs to close in on the signing of the left-back as Jose Mourinho’s rebuild of the north London side continues.

Spurs have reportedly accepted to include a buy-back clause of around €45m in the deal, whilst they will also offer Real Madrid the opportunity to match any future bids accepted for the player.

Reguilon is reported to have agreed a five-year deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where he is expected to become the club’s fourth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Matt Doherty and Joe Hart and will be expected to compete with Ben Davies for a place in the first-team.

The news will come as a welcome boost following a disappointing opening day defeat to Everton, whilst there could yet be further positive news with talks continuing with Real Madrid over the potential return of Gareth Bale on loan.

Bale has endured a difficult time in the Spanish capital of late and the club are desperate to remove the Welshman from their wage bill, though his staggering £600,000-a-week wages are likely to prove problematic for Spurs, even if largely subsidised by Real.

Bale could, however, opt to take a pay cut in order to get his faltering career back on track and his return would offer huge excitement to Spurs, the 31-year-old twice named as the PFA Player of the Year during a brilliant six-year spell with the club.
