Ranking the five Premier League clubs to score the most goals in 2022 so far

Tottenham began the season with a bang to become the Premier League’s early pacesetters, coming from behind to thrash Southampton 4-1 on the opening weekend.

The north Londoners have shown significant improvement under Antonio Conte in recent months and now boast one of the most exciting forward lines in the division.

Following another impressive attacking performance, we look at the five Premier League clubs who have scored the most league goals in 2022.

Leicester – 33

Leicester ranks fifth for goals scored this calendar year, helped largely by a strong finish to the 2021/22 campaign.

Brendan Rodgers’ side missed out on European qualification, but ended the campaign with three wins from their final four fixtures, including comfortable victories over relegated Norwich (3-0) and Watford (5-1).

Leicester then thrashed Southampton 4-1 in their final fixture of the season, with James Maddison on the scoresheet for the fourth consecutive Premier League game.

The 25-year-old has been in brilliant form for the Foxes since the turn of the new year, with only Harry Kane having been directly involved in more than his 13 league goals among English players in 2022.

Chelsea – 34

Chelsea have scored 34 goals in the Premier League since the turn of the new year, a figure which ranks the west Londoners fourth in the division.

Thomas Tuchel’s side recorded their biggest win in that time at Southampton in April, as the Blues hit the South Coast side for six at St Mary’s with Mason Mount and Timo Werner each scoring braces in a 6-0 win.

Chelsea’s relative lack of goals in comparison to rival sides saw the club register just 32 points across the second half of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, far less than Liverpool (52), Manchester City (43) and Tottenham (41).

Tuchel will hope the arrival of Raheem Sterling can increase his side’s goal threat this season, following the failed return of Romelu Lukaku to Stamford Bridge last season.

Liverpool – 46

There’s a sharp increase to third in these rankings with Liverpool having scored 46 goals in 2022.

The Reds were the Premier League’s form side across the final stages of the 2021/22 campaign, with their run of form taking the title race to the final weekend.

Unbeaten in the Premier League since December 28, their run of results included big wins over both Leeds (6-0) and Manchester United  (4-0) at Anfield, while Jurgen Klopp’s side have scored in each of their 19 league fixtures in 2022.

Mohamed Salah ended last season as the joint-leading scorer in the Premier League to win a third Golden Boot and began the new season with a goal as the Reds were held to a 2-2 draw at Fulham last weekend.

Manchester City – 50

Manchester City have scored 50 goals in the Premier League this year, a haul which helped Pep Guardiola’s side retain the title last season.

City won the Premier League for a fourth time in five seasons in 2021/22, losing just one game – a 3-2 home defeat to Tottenham in February – following the turn of the new year.

City found their goalscoring groove across the run-in, thrashing Manchester United 4-1 in early March to start a spectacular run of form.

The champions scored 24 goals across their final six fixtures of the Premier League season, a run which included Kevin De Bruyne’s stunning four-goal haul in a 5-1 win at Wolves.

City have since added Erling Haaland to their ranks and the summer signing wasted little time in making an impression with a brace against West Ham on his Premier League debut.

Tottenham – 51

Tottenham are the leading goalscorers in the Premier League in 2022, having shown remarkable improvement across Antonio Conte’s time in charge.

The Italian arrived in November and galvanised an underperforming squad, leading the north Londoners to a top four finish and Champions League qualification.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min have been in sensational form in recent months for Spurs, with the latter’s prolific end to the 2021/22 campaign ending with a share of the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

The arrival of Dejan Kulusevski in January has also added another layer of potency to the club’s forward line and the Sweden international has made an immediate impact in English football, averaging a goal involvement every 84 minutes.

Each of the trio have managed 15+ direct goal involvements in 2022, a figure only Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne can match across the rest of the Premier League.
