Premier League teams with the biggest points drop in 2023-24

Premier League teams set out each season with an objective to improve but campaigns do not always unfold as planned.

After the conclusion of the 2023-24 season we’ve looked at the teams who have suffered the biggest regression. Here are the five teams with the biggest points drop from the 2022-23 season to 2023-24.

The Premier League teams with the biggest points drop in 2023-24:

5. Fulham: -5

Fulham finished the 2023-24 season five points worse off than the previous campaign, ending the campaign 13th after a top-half finish on their Premier League return last season.

However, the Cottagers will have few concerns after another season of top-flight stability. After a recent yo-yo existence between the top two divisions, Fulham are preparing for a third consecutive campaign in the Premier League for the first time in a decade.

4. Newcastle: -11

Newcastle exceeded all expectations to secure a top-four finish last season, securing a place in the Champions League for the first time since 2003-04.

Eddie Howe’s team were unable to match those performances and ended the 2023-24 season seventh in the Premier League, with 11 points less than last season.

The club’s place in the Europa Conference League is still not confirmed, with the Magpies needing Manchester City to beat Manchester United in this weekend’s FA Cup final to seal their place in Europe.

3. Brighton: -14

Roberto De Zerbi led Brighton to the club’s highest-ever league position in 2022-23 as the Seagulls secured a top-six finish and place in European competition for the first time.

After losing key figures in Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill during last summer’s transfer window, De Zerbi’s second season was always likely to be a challenge. Brighton ended the campaign 10th in the table, a third consecutive top-half finish, but 14 points worse off than last season.

The Seagulls are another side who will be under new management next season after the announcement that De Zerbi will leave the Amex Stadium.

2. Manchester United: -15

Manchester United’s season was one of unwanted lows, as the Red Devils slumped to their lowest league finish (8th) of the Premier League era.

It was the first time since 1989-90 that Manchester United had finished outside the top seven in England’s top tier, while their 13 league defeats were a record for a Premier League season.

The Red Devils will not compete in European competition for only the second time in the Premier League era next season, unless they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final on May 25.

1. Brentford: -20

Brentford suffered the biggest decline in the Premier League in terms of points won in 2023-24, dropping a whopping 20 points from the previous campaign.

The Bees finished ninth in 2022-23, their fourth-highest fini in the top flight, with a 20-goal campaign from Ivan Toney propelling the club’s season.

Toney’s eight-month ban for breaching betting rules, alongside a lengthy spell on the sidelines for Bryan Mbeuemo, saw Thomas Frank’s side struggle to match the previous season’s exploits.
