Manchester United travel to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League, looking for a first win in five matches.
United beat Sabah 4-0 on matchday one, but since then have lost to Manchester City and Brighton and drawn with Fulham and Tottenham. Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, in which they led against ten men before Dominic Solanke’s stoppage-time equaliser, left Michael Carrick’s side 12th in the Premier League with six points from six games.
They have never beaten Atletico in four competitive meetings, and Diego Simeone’s side have won their last four matches in La Liga. United have, however, lost only one of their last 11 matches against Spanish clubs.
Manchester United team news
Matthijs de Ligt (back) is out again, and Benjamin Sesko (lower leg), Manuel Ugarte (anterior cruciate ligament) and Tom Heaton (abdomen) are also unavailable. Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) were both forced off through injury on international duty, which leaves Diogo Dalot and Luke Shaw as the expected full-backs. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are likely to continue as the centre-back pairing, with Senne Lammens in goal.
Carlos Baleba is pushing for a start in midfield, but Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans are expected to retain their places in the double pivot. Bruno Fernandes is set to play at number 10, with Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford either side of him. Matheus Cunha, who scored against Sabah and set up Mbeumo’s goal against Tottenham, is expected to lead the line in Sesko’s absence.
Manchester United predicted lineup
Manchester United possible starting XI: Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha
