Manchester United linked with surprise interest in Fernando Llorente

Manchester United are being linked with a surprise move for Fernando Llorente ahead of the closing of the transfer window.

The striker is a free agent following the expiration of his contract at Tottenham at the end of last season, and has been linked with moves to Italian sides Roma and Lazio.

However, according to the usually reliable Gianluca Di Marzio, the Spaniard has emerged as a surprise target for Manchester United, potentially as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku is being heavily linked with a move to Serie A, with Inter Milan thought to have had a third bid of £68m plus add ons rejected this week.

The Belgian is currently training with his former side Anderlecht, despite reports claiming that Manchester United had expected him back at Carrington on Tuesday, with the striker looking for clarity on his future before deciding whether to return to England or not.

United have been linked with a move for ageing Juventus forward Mario Mandzukic, although they have little over 24 hours to get that particular deal done, which is where the links to Llorente start to make a little bit of sense.

With the 34-year-old out of contract, Llorente is not registered to any club, and would therefore be able to sign for a Premier League side after Thursday’s 5pm deadline.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to introduce a more dynamic and pressing style of play, the links to Mandzukic and Llorente seem to suggest that the Norwegian is keen to have the option of a physical presence as an alternative.

Llorente netted just six times for Spurs last season, including a controversial winning goal in Spurs Champions League win over Man City.
