Manchester United are close to completing a move for Bruno Fernandes after agreeing a fee of £68m for the Sporting Lisbon star.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have been tracking the Portuguese international throughout the winter window, but after weeks of negotiations, have now agreed terms over a deal that will see the 25-year-old head to Old Trafford.
Manchester United had seen their initial offer rejected by the Lisbon side, but after improving their initial bid in the past 24 hours, a move is nearing that will see Fernandes join the club for an initial €55m (£46.56m) rising to €80m (£68m) with add-ons.
Reports conveniently emerged on Tuesday morning had that Barcelona had entered the race for Fernandes, though whether this was genuine interest from Catalonia or a tactical ploy from Sporting remains unclear.
The Spanish side had reportedly been interested in a deal to sign the midfielder before loaning him to La Liga rivals Valencia, as part of a package that would see forward Rodrigo Moreno head to Barcelona from the Mestalla before the transfer deadline.
That move now appears dead in the water, with widespread reports, including Sky Sports, claiming that Fernandes will fly to England on Wednesday to complete the formalities of a move to United, with a view to having the player registered in time for the weekend fixture against Wolves.

The signing of Fernandes will be a major boost to United’s hopes of securing a top four finish and Champions League qualification, the Sporting captain having starred in Portugal’s top flight in recent seasons and offering additional creativity and goal threat to Solskjaer’s side.
Having scored an impressive 32 goals in all competitions last season, the former Sampdoria star has continued in similar fashion this term with eight goals and seven assists in 17 Primeira Liga appearances so far this season.
